iPhone 17 vs iPhone 17 Pro

Apple still sells one of these. The Pro adds the A19 Pro, a 48MP telephoto at 100mm and a 1TB tier, in a body 29 g heavier — on the same screen, the same iOS and the same IP68 rating.

Which one fits

Consider iPhone 17 if

  • You want an iPhone at $929 to start
  • You want a phone that weighs 177 g
  • You shoot wide and ultra-wide and rarely reach for a telephoto

Consider iPhone 17 Pro if

  • You want the A19 Pro chip
  • You want a phone that weighs 206 g
  • You are buying from remaining retail stock rather than from Apple

Main tradeoffs

  • $929 to start from Apple, 177 g, and a body 7.95 mm deeptwo rear lenses with no telephoto, the A19 rather than the A19 Pro, 512GB as the ceiling, and 30 hours of quoted video playback rather than 33
  • The A19 Pro, a 48MP telephoto at 100mm, a 1TB tier and 33 hours of quoted video playback206 g, and a model Apple has stopped selling, so what you pay depends on which retailer still has one

The same screen, the same iOS, the same IP68 rating and the same charging claim. What the Pro adds is the A19 Pro, a third rear lens at 100mm and a 1TB tier, in a body 29 g heavier — and one more thing that decides most of it: Apple still sells only one of these two.

Overview

Start with what does not change, because on this pair it is most of the phone. The display is the same entry on both specification sheets, word for word: 6.3 inches, 2622 x 1206, 460 ppi, Dynamic Island, Always-On, ProMotion to 120Hz, 3000 nits outdoors. Both are IP68 to six metres for thirty minutes. Both reach 50% in 20 minutes on a 40W adapter with MagSafe at 25W. Both run iOS. Six things differ, and one of them is not on the specification sheet at all: Apple sells the iPhone 17 and does not sell the iPhone 17 Pro.

Key differences

The A19 against the A19 Pro. Two rear lenses against three. 30 hours of quoted video playback against 33. 177 g against 206. A 512GB ceiling against 1TB. And $929 from Apple against whatever a retailer still charges.

Availability, and why it comes first

Apple lists the iPhone 17 at $929 unlocked. The iPhone 17 Pro is no longer in Apple's store — its own buy page now redirects to the general iPhone page — so the $1,099 it launched at is a historical figure rather than a price you can pay. What you would actually pay depends on which retailer still has stock, in what configuration and at what discount, and it comes without Apple's own purchase and support terms. That is not a small footnote on a comparison between a current phone and a discontinued one; it is the first thing to settle.

Price

$929 for the iPhone 17 at 256GB unlocked, $1,129 at 512GB. Apple also lists $899 and $1,099 for the same two tiers with a $30 connectivity discount that requires activating with a carrier, which is a carrier deal rather than a list price. Against that, the 17 Pro's $1,099 is what Apple charged at launch. The two numbers are not the same kind of number and the page does not subtract one from the other.

Cameras

This is the clearest hardware difference. On the iPhone 17 the back carries two lenses, both 48MP: the main at 26 mm and the Ultra Wide at 13 mm. The 17 Pro has three: a 48MP Fusion Main at 24 mm and f/1.78, the same 48MP Ultra Wide at 13 mm, and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto at 100 mm, which is 4x. One phone can frame a subject at 100 mm optically and the other cannot. The main lenses also sit at slightly different focal lengths, 26 mm against 24. Megapixel counts are identical across every lens here, so nothing in this comparison is a resolution difference — it is a question of how many focal lengths the phone gives you.

The chip

An A19 with a 5-core GPU against an A19 Pro with a 6-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. Two different parts, and Apple publishes no benchmark that would put a number on the gap between them, so there is nothing here to call faster. What can be said is that one carries a GPU core and a Neural Engine the other's entry does not list.

Battery

Apple quotes both on the same two measurements, which makes them comparable — and makes one coincidence worth pointing out. Video playback: up to 30 hours on the iPhone 17, up to 33 on the Pro. Streamed video: up to 27 against up to 30. **The iPhone 17's video playback figure and the Pro's streamed video figure are both 30 hours, and they are not the same test.** Read video against video and streamed against streamed, and the Pro is quoted three hours ahead on each.

Size and weight

149.6 mm tall, 71.5 wide and 7.95 deep at 177 g, against 150.0 tall, 71.9 wide and 8.75 deep at 206 g. The height and width are within half a millimetre of each other — these are the same size phone in the hand. What differs is 0.8 mm of thickness and 29 g, which is about 16% more weight for a phone you would struggle to tell apart from across a table.

Storage

256GB and 512GB on the iPhone 17. The Pro adds a 1TB tier above those. If 512GB is enough, this costs nothing.

What is identical on both

The display, down to the character: same size, same resolution, same pixel density, same Dynamic Island, same Always-On, same ProMotion, same peak brightness. The water rating, IP68 to six metres for up to thirty minutes. The wired charging claim, 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter, and MagSafe at 25W. The 18MP Center Stage front camera. And iOS on both. Neither phone comes with a published minimum number of years of updates, because Apple states none for either — two silences, not a shared promise.

Which one may fit you better

Consider the iPhone 17 if you want to buy from Apple at $929 with Apple's own warranty and support, if you shoot wide and ultra-wide and rarely reach for a telephoto, or if 177 g is the weight you want to carry. Consider the iPhone 17 Pro if you want a 100 mm telephoto lens, the A19 Pro, or a 1TB tier, and you are comfortable buying from a retailer's remaining stock.

Important considerations

The screen is the same, so nothing about how the phone looks or feels in use separates them. The battery figures are Apple's own and differ by three hours on each of two measurements, which is real but modest. And the availability difference outlasts all of it: a discontinued phone's price moves with stock rather than with a price list, and it will keep moving. Check what is actually being charged before treating any figure on this page as what the Pro costs.
