One generation separates these two Pro iPhones, and less separates them than the year suggests. Apple quotes the same display for both — 6.3 inches, 2622x1206 at 460 ppi, ProMotion to 120Hz, 3000 nits outdoors — and both carry three 48MP rear cameras with a 100 mm 4x telephoto in a body of identical dimensions. What changes is the chip, a variable aperture on the main camera, three hours of quoted video playback, a 2TB storage tier, and the fact that Apple still sells one of them.
Overview
A generation apart, and less separates them than the year suggests. Both are 6.3-inch Pro iPhones with three 48MP rear cameras, the same 100 mm 4x telephoto and identical dimensions. Apple quotes the same display specification for each, down to the resolution and the 3000-nit outdoor peak. The 18 Pro starts at $1,199; the 17 Pro launched at $1,099 and Apple no longer sells it directly.
Key differences
Five things separate them. The chip: A19 Pro with a 6-core GPU against A20 Pro with a 7-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. The main camera: a fixed f/1.78 aperture against a variable one, f/1.48 to f/4.0. Battery: up to 33 hours of video playback against up to 36. Storage: 1TB at the top against 2TB. And price, with the complication that only one of the two is still sold by Apple.
What is the same
Worth stating plainly, because it is most of the phone. The display specification is identical on both spec sheets: 6.3-inch all-screen OLED, 2622x1206 at 460 ppi, Dynamic Island, Always-On, ProMotion to 120Hz, 3000 nits peak outdoors. The rear camera layout is the same three 48MP lenses at 24 mm, 13 mm and 100 mm. The dimensions match to a tenth of a millimetre, 150.0 x 71.9 x 8.75 mm, and both are rated IP68 to a depth of 6 metres for 30 minutes. Both run iOS.
Camera
The layout matches, so the difference sits inside the main lens. The 17 Pro's 48MP main camera is a fixed f/1.78. The 18 Pro's steps between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. A wider maximum aperture takes in more light and a narrower one holds more of the frame in focus, so a lens that can do both is worth a generation to someone who chooses an aperture deliberately and worth little to someone who does not. The Ultra Wide and the telephoto are the same on both: 13 mm at f/2.2 and 100 mm 4x at f/2.8.
Chip
A19 Pro against A20 Pro. Both have a 6-core CPU. The GPU goes from 6 cores to 7, and the Neural Engine from a 16-core part to a dual 16-core arrangement. Apple publishes no performance figure comparing the two, so this is a newer chip rather than a measured gap.
Battery and charging
Apple quotes up to 33 hours of video playback for the 17 Pro and up to 36 for the 18 Pro, with streamed video at 30 and 33 hours — three hours on both measures. Charging is quoted under different conditions, and the conditions are the point: the 17 Pro reaches 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter or higher, the 18 Pro in around 15 minutes with a 60W-capable adapter and Adjustable Voltage Supply. Both support MagSafe and Qi2 wireless up to 25W. Apple also quotes a typical-use figure for the 18 Pro, up to 24 hours, and publishes none for the 17 Pro, so there is nothing to compare there.
Storage and price
Both start at 256GB and both reach 1TB. Only the 18 Pro offers 2TB, and that configuration is $2,399. The 18 Pro starts at $1,199. The 17 Pro launched at $1,099 and Apple no longer sells it directly, which means its price today is whatever a retailer with remaining stock asks — it may be below the launch figure or above it, and it is not a number this page can quote for you.
Software support
Neither support window is something Apple states. The 17 Pro shipped with iOS 26 and the 18 Pro ships with iOS 27, but Apple publishes no minimum number of years of updates for either, so the usual assumption that the newer phone is supported for longer is an assumption rather than a published fact.
Which one may fit you better
Consider the iPhone 17 Pro if you want the Pro camera layout, the 4x telephoto and the 120Hz display, you are comfortable buying from remaining retail stock, and the price you are quoted makes the gap worth it. Consider the iPhone 18 Pro if you want the variable aperture on the main camera, the newer chip, the longer quoted battery figure or 2TB of storage, or if buying from Apple on Apple’s warranty terms matters to you.
Important considerations
The display is the same, so it is not a reason to choose between them, and the camera layout is the same, so the telephoto is not one either. What remains is a lens that can change aperture, a newer chip, three hours of quoted video playback and one more storage tier. Set against that is a practical asymmetry: one of these phones has a price Apple publishes and one does not. If the 17 Pro you can actually buy is close to $1,199, most of the argument for it goes away.
