Two sizes of one phone. The chip is the same, the three cameras are the same, and so are the software, the storage tiers, the charging claim and the IP68 rating. What $100 buys is a larger screen, a larger body and Apple’s longer quoted battery figures — and what it costs is 38 g in your pocket.

Overview

Apple sells the iPhone 18 Pro in two sizes, and almost nothing else separates them. Both run the A20 Pro. Both carry the same 48MP Pro Fusion camera system: a 24 mm main with a variable aperture, a 13 mm ultra wide and a 100 mm telephoto at 4x. Both ship iOS 27, both come in 256GB through 2TB, both charge to 50% in around fifteen minutes on a 60W-capable adapter, both are rated IP68. Four things differ, and all four are things you can see or feel.

Key differences

$1,199 against $1,299 at 256GB, and the $100 holds at every capacity. 6.3 inches at 2622 x 1206 against 6.9 inches at 2868 x 1320, both at 460 ppi. Apple quotes the Pro at 36 hours of video playback and the Pro Max at 45. And the Pro is 150.0 mm tall at 211 g where the Pro Max is 163.4 mm at 249.

Price

$1,199 for the Pro at 256GB and $1,299 for the Pro Max, and the gap does not widen with storage: $1,399 against $1,499 at 512GB, $1,799 against $1,899 at 1TB, $2,399 against $2,499 at 2TB. Those are Apple's list prices, before carrier deals, trade-in credit or financing, none of which belongs in a comparison of the two phones themselves.

The display

Both panels are Super Retina XDR at 460 ppi, with Dynamic Island, Always-On and ProMotion running adaptively up to 120Hz, and both peak at 3000 nits outdoors. What differs is area, not the panel: 6.3 inches at 2622 x 1206 on the Pro, 6.9 inches at 2868 x 1320 on the Pro Max. That is the whole trade in one line — more to look at, or less phone to hold — and neither answer is the right one in general.

Battery

This is the rare axis where two numbers can honestly be read against each other. Apple publishes the same three measurements for each model, taken the same way, so video playback compares with video playback: 36 hours on the Pro against 45 on the Pro Max, 33 against 40 for streamed video, and 24 against 30 hours of typical use. The direction is consistent across all three, which is more than most pairs in this category can say. These remain Apple's own figures under Apple's own conditions, not independent testing, and they describe the phones as Apple measured them rather than as your week will.

Size and weight

The Pro is 150.0 mm tall, 71.9 wide and 8.75 deep, at 211 g. The Pro Max is 163.4 tall, 78.0 wide and 8.75 deep, at 249 g. The depth is identical, so the whole difference is in the footprint and the mass: 13.4 mm more height, 6.1 mm more width, 38 g more weight. Thirty-eight grams is about eighteen per cent more to hold up in bed and to carry in a jacket, and 163.4 mm is a reach worth testing against your own thumb before deciding anything else on this page.

What is identical on both

The chip, down to the cores: the A20 Pro with a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. The cameras: the same three 48MP lenses, a 24 mm main with a variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4.0, a 13 mm ultra wide and a 100 mm telephoto at 4x, plus the same 18MP Center Stage front camera. The software, iOS 27. The storage ladder, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. The charging, 50% in around fifteen minutes on a 60W-capable adapter, with MagSafe and Qi2 up to 25W. And the water rating, IP68 to a maximum depth of six metres for up to thirty minutes. If any of those is what you are choosing on, these two are the same purchase.

Which one may fit you better

Consider the iPhone 18 Pro if $1,199 is the number that works, if you want the 211 g body, or if 150.0 mm is as much phone as your hand or your pocket wants. Consider the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want the 6.9-inch screen, if Apple's longer quoted figures matter to how you use a phone away from a charger, or if 249 g is weight you will not notice.

Important considerations

Neither phone comes with a published update commitment. Apple states no minimum number of years of iOS or security updates for either model, so nothing can be said here about how long each will be supported — and because the silence is identical on both sides, it is not a reason to pick one over the other. The battery figures are Apple's own: they can be compared with each other because the method matches, but they are not a measurement of your day. And the $100 is flat across all four capacities, so the storage you choose never changes the size decision.
